So I figured I would write this last post about major transport methods for me from my home to Nairobi. Namely Buses or Shuttles. There is only one shuttle (shuttles being 10-11 seater matatus that go straight no stopping) from Nairobi to Kakamega, the only problem is that it is absolutely sh!tty. There is a shuttle I at times take from Nairobi to Kisumu, or the vice versa, but that requires an extra trip from my place to Kisumu. But if I am going for speed I generally take the Kisumu shuttle. It can get me ahead by at least an hour if not more. But the next trip I will be taking will be via bus. This I do if I am lugging a lot of junk or it is a long voyage. Junk in this case being my backpack, my suitcase and a box of curios for home.
There are numerous bus companies operating in Kenya. When I first arrived the good one was Easy Coach. Then Akamba became the bus of choice. Now it is Crown. I suspect that before I am finally done with Peace Corps at least 2 more bus companies will have come and gone. Well not quite gone, they just don’t do a very good job of maintenance or upgrading their fleet so as time goes on they start to show their wear and tear. Plus they like to jack up their prices every couple o’ months.
