Every day during the world Cup the students, teachers and villagers bring me news of some team doing well or USA doing badly. I like to joke with my students about the World Cup, they tell me how bad USA is, and I simply respond with “yes the USA is bad, but Kenya is so bad it didn’t even make it to the World Cup to Lose” and then there is a back and forth over how good Kenya is versus everyone else. I do kind of find it odd how much emphasis my students and fellow teachers like to put on whose team is winning what and what country that team hales from. I don’t know about the World Cup teams, but I suspect many of the Soccer (football) teams are of such an international conglomeration that the only thing about what country the team comes from that matters is where/how they practice, and how the teams are run. I also view the Olympics in this way, most countries recruit the best athletes from other countries, so it is less about a country or regions skill so much as the amount of money they have and the prestige that can be had for playing/competing with that country.
On the subject of sports I also take issue with the idea of someone’s diety taking part. Apparently the World Cup Organizers got into a spat with some of the upper crust spectators over their desire to sacrifice some animals to their diety so said diety will help their team win. It is a contest between human beings, not a contest to see if your diety is more powerful than anothers, or if your diety that is the same diety as everyone elses but by a different name favors you more than others. To me the only hand a higher power should play in a sporting event is protecting the athletes from serious harm (I say serious harm, because one of the ways you learn is through pain)
I wrote a big e-mal, and I sent the e-mail that got put aside due to lack of a USB connection. Next week is Webuye for Cross Sectoral Training, and this coming weekend there will be a 4th of July party in Nairobi for all US citizens and employees in country.
Oh yes and the taste of Ginger when it is made into a Juice Concentrate for consumption is evil.
