Forget Everything You Thought You Knew

We’re just about finished with our last module (Blood and Lymph) before winter break. We actually get about three weeks off for, as one of our deans put it, our last “obligation free break of our lives.” Normally, someone saying something like that would intimidate me but since I’ve been hearing that for every holiday break for the last two years I’m not terribly worried.

The picture above is from one of my General Principles in Pharmacology lectures. The equations are there simply to represent the concept of enhanced drug responses and are not necessarily meant to be taken literally, but you have to admit, once you take a step back, they do seem a bit odd. Well these are just the tip of the counterintuitive concepts iceberg that is Pharmacology. “Sometimes five plus five equals ten… except when it equals fifteen.” The worst part is, at the time of the lecture these equations didn’t seem strange at all and made complete sense (I’m becoming a monster!). We’ll be getting large doses (ugh) of pharmacology for the next couple of months and I don’t know if I’m going to make it. As a matter of fact if I was just about to graduate from pharmacy school and had to deal with this stuff for the rest of my life I think I would die… and leave all my money and new car to my best friend… Adam.
