Guess Who This Is

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Original cartoon can be found here. I updated it to better represent the current political climate.

Update: I realize, at first glance, the character in this cartoon could be interpreted as a couple of individuals. Aaron was a good guess, but note the absence of facial hair on the face and lack of steam coming out of the character’s ears, signifying immense rage.

Update #2: Rachel was yet another good guess. She gets pretty worked up over politics but if I intended for this to be a picture of her I would have made sure she was wearing her awesome tiger shirt.

Update #3: Awesome tiger shirt also pictured here.

Update #4: While my poor artistic skills may have made the stick character look like mom, the dialogue does not match to her. She would be more inclined to say something like, “I don’t like getting in arguments on the internet,” or “I love Clay Aiken.”

Brain and Behavior

“All –
…please bring your skulls to class. Have a nice weekend!
— Dr. Durham”

Only in medical school could you receive an e-mail to remind you to (legally) bring a human skull to class. Thus begins my module on brain and behavior. We had our first day of class today and it was a doozy. The first day/week is always rough and they justify it by claiming they “front load” the modules but I’m getting the impression that this one might just be straight up loaded. I’m anxious but very eager at the same time. I don’t have a strong background in neurophysiology and so it will obviously be a difficult class but at the same time I should learn a great deal which will absolutely translate to any discipline I go into. Turns out the brain is kind of important.

If you have any questions about the brain, behavior, or really, pertaining anything above the neck, direct them to the comments section. I will answer the question in a future post when I either passively reach the information in class or actively seek out the answer from one of my professors… or I will just make up something that seems reasonable to me and spout it out as fact.

Dedication and Domination

Football season began on Thursday and, yet again, I’ve signed up for an abnormally high number of fantasy football leagues, especially for someone that is in medical school. Thankfully, this addiction is completely justified because about three years ago, to the chagrin of my baby brother, I had to give up video games in preparation for medical school. This transition was made easier by replacing my video game vice with less time consuming past times, like managing league winning fantasy sports teams.

Since I am on my computer studying for about twenty hours a day and have widespread access to the internet, my fantasy football teams really don’t have much of an impact on my academics. In fact, even if I can’t convince my girlfriend to broaden her cultural horizons and share in this wonderful past time with me (this year), the internet has support groups available to help significant others cope during this time of the year.

Fortunately, my hard work doesn’t go completely unnoticed. If you finish within the top three in a league, Yahoo! rewards you with a trophy. I feel like this picture indicates just how dominant I am compared to the “competition”.

Worst. News. Ever.

I had my first exam of my second year today. It went pretty well and afterward I thought to myself that there was nothing that could possibly happen that would ruin what might very well turn into the best day of my life. Some higher power took this as a challenge and did the one thing that could hurt me the most. When I arrived back at my apartment after my test I received word from a reliable source that Star Trek: The Experience, the Las Vegas Star Trek themed restaurant/bar/museum/amusement ride/dream-come-true will be closing after a strong ten year run. Beyond the disappointment of losing, what some consider, one of our country’s national treasures, this completely throws off my dream wedding plans. Thank goodness for backup plans.

I’ll be in mourning for an indefinite amount of time. I’d like to dedicate this collage to Major Kahlen.
