Oxygenated blood is red.
Deoxygenated blood is blue.
I can’t wait for dissection,
’cause I get to be with you.

Up At Lawrence On The Kaw

In Nina’s never ending quest to convert me to a Jayhawk, we attended my first KU basketball game. Every other month or so the Student Governing Council has a ticket giveaway for various concerts and events around town. I went to the last one and scored some tickets to the KU vs Baylor basketball game. This was actually kind of a surprise to me because I’m a Lamble and Lambles never win anything at raffles.

Before the game started we enjoyed some Mexican food at La Parilla and then moseyed through part of the campus with Nina explaining to me the history behind every building we passed and how she had an impact on them. For instance, she helped pass a bill to allot 100 gazillion dollars to build a cultural center. Once we almost got to the stadium I realized that Nina forgot to remind me to remember the tickets so we walked back to the car and grabbed them. The tour was less stimulating the second time through. We didn’t mind though because it was freezing out and we really enjoy the cold.

We ran into a couple friends at the game and got to sit near the top so we could see the entire court. They pretty much have a tradition for any play that happens on the court which was really neat but kind of exhausting for an old man like myself. Baylor has a pretty solid squad this year and while they kept it close for about half the game, KU ended up winning relatively handily. I’m glad I got to finally see a game at the legendary Allen Field House but I still claim Wildcat loyalty. Of course, if K-State gets knocked out of the tournament early this year this will give me a great justification for jumping ship.

Super Tuesday

Choosing to use our constitutional right to make our voices heard, my family and I attended the Kansas Democratic Caucus on Tuesday. Even though the whole system was completely inefficient and my candidate (I highly recommend this video) won in a fashion that practically made my vote (which I’m not even sure was counted) obsolete, I’m really glad I went. It was nice to be a part of the movement to make this country a better place and I’m sure it felt a lot better than spending the Tuesday evening at home watching American Idol with my mom (well, at least a close tie).

From what I’ve heard/read, the Kansas legislature chose to use a caucus system instead of actual primaries because it’s cheaper and they didn’t anticipate such a large turn out. This is a shame because thousands of voters were either forced to wait in line outside in the/a “Storm of the Century” or turned away completely. On the bright side, whether you’re conservative, liberal or anywhere in between and even though not everyone was counted, it’s nice to see such an immense interest this state has generated in politics.

Finally, on a more emotional note, it seems that “white males may play a more decisive roll in choosing the democratic candidate for president than in years past.” This hits very close to home for me because I am white… and a male. It’s just nice to know that my race and gender are finally getting the acknowledgment and respect that we’ve been forever starved of and so long strove for.

That’s So Raven

To promote his upcoming movie, Semi-Pro, and his relatively new comedy webpage, Funny or Die, Will Ferrell is on a comedy tour with fellow comedians Zach Galifinakis, Demetri Martin, and Nick Swardson. The tour’s first stop was K-State and since yesterday was the first day of a new module I decided I could afford to take the evening off to drive down with my good friend/ex-roommate/understudy, Andy, to see the show.

After getting to Manhattan and meeting up with my other good friend/ex-roommate/side kick, Dave, and enjoying some local flavor, we headed to the show. The show was less than two hours and the seating was uncomfortable but I laughed through a majority of it and enjoyed myself. I missed small portions of it because the two guys I was with made me explain jokes and why they were funny to them, but I guess that’s what I signed on for.

I’m not a die hard Will Ferrell fan or anything but I do feel like I’ve grown up with him. My family and I would generally watch SNL every Saturday and we watched when he first came on the scene doing impressions of Harry Caray and Janet Reno. I then watched him make the jump to the big screen with Austin Powers and Night at the Roxbury. He then quickly evolved to a bankable star raking in $20 mil per lead role. And nowadays he can pretty much do anything he wants and get paid for it. For instance, last night he rode around the stage on an old person’s mobility scooter for ten minutes wearing a bikini shirt. Comedy gold.

Since the auditorium was dark, the picture above is the best I could do. It’s a picture of Ron Burgundy interviewing K-State’s head football coach, Ron Prince. Among other things, Ron grilled Ron on topics like steroid abuse and why K-State is better than KU… at everything.
