Probably one of my greatest and most primal of fears in this world is any body of water that I cannot see the bottom of. The mere thought of something waiting in the dark abyss, biding its time until it can pull me down is terrifying. I don’t know why more people don’t share my grave concern of the watery dark, I believe it might have to do with my immense exposure to the horror genre.
From movies and TV to comics and a strange interest in zombies I have been introduced to enough horrific tales that I could relate any given situation to a nightmarish encounter. I mean heck, I have to check and make sure there are no fluke men in outdoor latrines before I can sit down, thank you X-files.
However I would have to say the fears of water would mostly stem from my introduction to the Cthulhu Mythos: Psychotic death cults and evil ancient squid gods would take its toll on even the most sane of individuals.
Interestingly enough ever since I became aware of Lovecraft’s work I have been noticing it more and more in popular culture, Hellboy, WoW and dozens of movies center on the mythos of Cthulhu and what is really strange is…I have never actually read it.
Anyway, those traveling to a body of water beware, squid gods and cult zombies may be awaiting you.
I am really scared of the ocean. I just always thought it was because I was raised in the midwest…
looks like med school is even more taxing than i imagined.
i take that back – i thought i was on adam’s blog – now i guess i should say something like –
1) lesson prep must not take as long as i thought, or
2) Is this from a lesson? or
3) figures.
Does this mean you’re not going to swim in our lake?
I would like to point out that lovecraft just took most of his material from previous authors and mythology just as you claim people take material from him.
not to mention the “nambies” that might be waiting for you.
I would like to point out that this was not a criticism of Lovecraft, more admiration than anything.
Second, there are no original ideas, everyone stole from someone else.
How is school this semester?
